Create silky smooth water using our easy Photoshop Tutorial

Silky smooth water effects Tutorial - Change the motion of your water to silky smooth using our easy to follow photoshop tutorial.

This tutorial will teach you how to show a stunning effect to your waterfalls, or photographs which have running water. We will use the motion blue in photoshop to create the effect of silky smooth water. Digital SLR camera's today can create this by changing their settings on the camera itself but if you don't own an SLR camera you can still achieve the same effect by following our photoshop tutorial below.

In the below photoshop tutorial we have used a photograph, found on flickr.com, of a waterfall, photographed by Red Dog 3D.

Lets get started with our photoshop tutorial!

Motion Blue for a Silky Smooth water effect - Photoshop Tutorial

Step 1:
Open the image you will be using for this tutorial.

Step 2:
With your image open in photoshop select the (lasso tool) from the left hand tools palette. Some people like to use the normal lasso tool but I refre to use the polygonal lasso tool. To choose the polygonal lasso tool click and hold the lasso tool as pictured below and then click on (polygonal lasso tool).

Step 3:
With the polygonal lasso tool selected click your way around the waterfall. Be as accurate as possible to only get the waterfall. When you get around to where you started you will get running ants around your water like in the image below.

Running ants around the waterfall selection.

Step 4:
We now need to put our selection on it's own new layer. On your keyboard press (CTRL + J). This will place our selection on it's own new layer.

Step 5:
Now is the time to apply the motion blue to the waterfall selection. On the top menu bar click on (Filter > Blur > Motion Blur). This will open the motion Blur window. This is were you set the angle and distance of your blur. If your water falls straight down you will use 90° angle but becasue my water seems to be falling to the left I have used an angle of 84°. You will need to adjust it to suit your own image. For the distance I have used 75 to give me that silky smooth water effect. Play around with the settings untill you are happy with the way your waterfall looks.

Step 6:
Once you are happy with the way your waterfall looks simply flatten your image by clicking (Layer > Flatten Image).

Your now done with creating a silky smooth water effect on your image. Don't forget to save your work.
