Using selective blur to create a depth of field effect using our easy Photoshop Tutorial

Depth of field (using selective blur) - Easily create a shallower depth of field to your photographs by using selective blur in Adobe Photoshop.


This technique is the simplest to achieve a depth of field to your photographs. We will show you how to blur the background of your image making it appear that it was actually the perfect shot taken with your camera. All digital SLR camera's today are able to give you the same result as what we are trying to achieve here but if you do not own an SLR camera you can still get this effect by following our tutorial below.

In the below photoshop tutorials we have used photograph I took of a tulip. The photograph was shot using a digital SLR camera (Nikon D40 with a 55-200mm Lens).

Lets get started with our photoshop tutorial!

Depth of Field (Selective Blur Method) - Photoshop Tutorial

Step 1:
Open your image that you will working with in Adobe Photoshop.

Step 2:
We are first going to select our selection. In our case it is the tulip and the stem. Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool from the side menu bar.

With the Polygonal Lasso Tool selected, click around your selection, ending where you started. Once you get to were you began you will have running ants around your selection as pictured below.

Step 3:
From the top menu bar click on (Select > Inverse). This will move the running ants so the background will be selected instead of our tulip and stem.

Step 4:
Now go to (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur). This will open the Gaussian Blur window. For our image we used a radius of 8. If you prefer your image to have have depth you can make the radius higher.

Congratulations. You have now finished this tutorial.

Excellent tutorial. I was using other methods to create DOF. But this one is really good, simple yet effective.
