What is a Lens Extension Tube?

Lens extension tubes

Extension tubes, also known as macro extension tubes, are used primarily for macro photography. The sole purpose of extension tubes is to move the lens further away from the sensor in the camera's body. The further away the lens is to the sensor, the closer you can focus and the greater the magnification. Cheaper extension tubes like the ones pictured to the left can be found on ebay. I purchased this set of 3 extension tubes for my Nikon D40 for only $15. Extension tubes can be metal or plastic and come in 5 sections, the 3 tubes plus bayonet rings at each end, one for mounting the tube to the lens and the other to connect the tube to the cameras body.

Benefits of using extension tubes

The major benefit to using an extension tube is the cost. If your budget is limited and won't allow you to purchase an expensive macro lens, then extension tubes will give you some satisfaction until your able to afford to buy the real deal. Because of the low cost of my dirt cheap extension tubes compared to the cost of a brand name extension tube which you could expect to pay around $180US and up, you might think that purchasing cheap tubes will give you far less quality pictures, but this is not the case. The only difference between the cheap brand and the expensive brand is that the cheap extension tubes takes away the ability to autofocus. Therefore if you purchase a cheap set of extension tubes you will have to use manual mode. Many photographers wouldn't see this as a problem!

Extension tubes are very light and compact compared to a macro lens. I carry mine with me every time I go out on a photo shoot.

Extension tubes work with most camera lenses, with the exemption of those with very short focal lengths.

Extension tubes can be used with telephoto lenses. A long telephoto lens is great for making objects bigger, but the focal length is huge. An extension tube will allow you to enlarge with the telephoto but still maintain a good working distance.

Extension tubes are simple and hardy. There's not a lot that can go wrong with them.

Note - Extension tubes can also be used with macro lenses.

Disadvantages of using lens extension tubes

The major disadvantage to using lens extension tubes is that they take away all auto functions on the lens such as aperture and focus. Having no autofocus and a dark viewfinder, it can make focusing manually extremely difficult.

Extreme close-up photography using extension tubes puts the lens so close to the subject that you could loose some lighting.

When you have extension tubes and the lens on the camera's body you will need to hold underneath the lens to take the strain off the camera.

How to use a lens extension tube

Extension tubes fit between the camera body and the lens. For those of you who have purchased brand name lens extension tubes the only thing you need to do is connect the tubes, setup and use. However for those who purchased the cheap version of the tubes will need a little more work.

Before putting on your extension tubes it is best to have your lens on and set your camera to manual mode. Focus automatically on the subject being photographed. After it has focused, turn off the automatic settings on your lens then connect your extension tubes. While looking through the viewfinder press the shutter button half way. Move closer to the subject until it gets in clear focus and take the shot.
