Enhancing lips using our easy Photoshop Tutorial

Enhancing Lips - Give your portraits glossy luscious lips just like the models. With just a few simple steps your will have your portraits looking like the professionals.



I have noticed that time and time again the first thing a novice Photoshop retouch artist will do is slap a brushload of scarlet red on a models lips. We are going to show you exactly how they get them luscious lips we all dream for.

In the below photoshop tutorial we have used a photograph found on flickr.com and photographed by Tiago Montagnini.

Lets get started with our photoshop tutorial!

Enhancing Lips - Photoshop Tutorial

Step 1:
Open your image that you will working with in Adobe Photoshop.

Step 2:
The first thing we are going to do is to make a selection of the lips and apply a small feather settings. First select your Polygonal Lasso Tool from the side tool bar.

With the Polygonal Lasso Tool selected click a selection around the lips ending where you started. When your done you will have marching ants around the lips. Next, on the top menu bar click (Select > Feather). Add a feather radius of no more than 2.

Step 3:
On your keyboard press (Ctrl + J). This will place the lip selection onto a new layer.

Step 4:
On the top menu bar go to (Image > Adjustments > Selective Color). Use the settings shown in the image below. Applying the settings will generate a strong pink color.

Step 5:
We are now going to change the pink to a luscious red and bring out the texture. With the lips layer selected, change the blend mode to Color Burn.

Step 6:
Open the curves dialog box by pressing (Ctrl + M) on your keyboard and apply the settings shown in the image below. This will create a more realistic wet look.

Step 7:
We now need to create some highlights on the lips. Click on (Create a new Layer) icon in the layers palette.

With the brush tool selected from the side menu paint some highlights on the lips with a small brush using 50% gray. The last thing to do is to change the layers blend mode to Color Dodge.

Step 8:
Once you are happy with the way your image looks simply flatten your image by clicking (Layer > Flatten Image) on the top menu bar.

Don't forget to save your work when you are done.
