What are close-up filters?
|

|
Close-up
filters (also known as macro filters) are a filter that
screws onto the end of your cameras lens. The main purpose
of the close-up filter is to decrease the minimum distance
required for the lens to focus. Take the telephoto lens
for example. This lens would normally require you to be
at least 1.5m from the subject being photographed before
the subject will properly focus, but attaching a close-up
filter to the lens will let you stand much closer to the
subject. Filters
can be used together (stacked) or used separately but always
remember that if stacking your filters, that the strongest
filter (+10 or the highest number filter) is closest to
the lens. |
Advantages
of using close-up filters
|
Cost
Cost is the biggest advantage of using close-up filters.
If you like close-up or macro photography and can not afford
a genuine macro lens, then close-up filters are a much cheaper
alternative. While macro lenses can cost in excess of $1500,
digital optic close-up filters you can pick up for as little
as $14.95.
Close-up filters are available in +1, +2, +3, +4 and +10
diopters for close-up photography.
Size
and Weight
The compact size and weight of the close-up filters
are much less then that of a genuine macro lens. Macro
lens are quite heavy so if you are on a long photo shoot
it may be easier to take along close-up filters.

Disadvantages
of using close-up filters
|
Image
Quality
The biggest disadvantage
to using close-up or macro filters is image quality. Close-up
filters decrease image quality, so if it is quality you
are after I would recommend investing your money on a
genuine macro lens. To a beginner photographer the quality
of the image may not be that noticeable so for a beginner
I'd recommend trying the close-up filters.
|
Why
use close-up filters over the inbuilt macro feature
|
Better
Magnification
Close-up or macro
filters lets you obtain more magnification at a greater
distance to the subject being photographed. You can have
your lens on maximum zoom and still get good magnification.
