Adding a soft glow to images with a solid background color is especially nice on wedding portraits or family portraits. The process of adding a soft glow is easy and with just a few simple steps you will have professional looking portraits in minutes.

In the below photoshop tutorial we have used a photograph found on flickr.com which was photographed by Matt Garland. For the sake of this tutorial we changed the background to a solid color.

Lets get started with our photoshop tutorial!

Add a soft glow to your portrait - Photoshop Tutorial

Step 1:
Open the image you will be using for this tutorial.

Step 2:
We first need to duplicate our background layer which is our whole image. If your layers palette is not open click on (windows > layers) in the top tool bar. With your layers palette open you then simply click on (CTRL + J) on your keyboard. Change the blend mode of the new layer to multiply as shown below. This will make your photograph look quite dark.

Step 3:
Click on (Add Layer Mask) at the bottom of the layers palette as shown below. This will add a layer mask to your duplicate layer.

Step 4:
On your keyboard press D and then X. Doing so will set your foreground color to black. Press B on your keyboard to select the brush tool. Choose a large soft edge brush from the dropdown as shown below. For my image I chose 200 but you select the size that best fits your image.

All that is left to do is to click over the person/persons in your image. Click multiple times to reveal the brighter layer underneath but be sure not to go to far from the persons edge. Continue clicking until the person/persons are fully revealed and there is a soft edge around the subject.

Click over your image.

Step 5:
On the top bar click on (Layer > Flatten Image). Congratulations! You have now finished adding a soft glow to your portrait.

Don't forget to save your work when you are done.
